Gene technology to ascertain meat quality

Animal production and Health Department will use gene technology to ascertain the real brand of different flesh available in the market for consumption, Livestock and Rural Community Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman said.

He was participating at a meeting with the ministry officials recently he said some traders sell buffalo–meat for beef and dog-meat for mutton and the aim of this program is to protect consumers from these errant traders.

The Minister further said that there is no opportunity to spread diseases or germs from chicken and eggs imported from abroad as these items are subjected to thorough tests at quarantime centres.

Deputy Minister HR Mithrapala, Department Director General Nimal Chandrsiri and other officials participated.
