Sri Lanka is a pluralistic society where all communities can realize
their aspirations within a strong, caring and united State. Sir
Ponnambalam Arunachalam was one of the many sons of Sri Lanka who worked
for the realisation of such a dream, International Monetary Cooperation
Senior Minister Dr.Sarath Amunugama said.
Minster Amunugama was addressing the Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam
commemoration held in Colombo yesterday.
”Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam had a distinguished career. He was a
great public servant and patriot in the true sense of the word. He, more
than any other man of his times, helped lay the foundation for the
freedom which we later came to enjoy and take for granted.
The Minister said that Sir Arunachalam was always in the forefront to
safeguard the dignity and respect of all communities in this country.
“Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam was not only steeped in Hindu and
Christian mysticism, but was deeply involved in the revival of Buddhist
activities in Sri Lanka, he said.
He was one of the leaders who insisted in greater responsibilities of
all citizens irrespective of their communities. He encouraged all
communities to fight for their rights and dignity while respecting the
laws of the country, Minister Amunugama said.
“He was a leader respected and trusted by all communities and an
inspiration to all who cherish high ideals. He was a outstanding member
of the civil service and held several positions of responsibility such
as the Registrar General and judicial posts in various parts of the
island”, the Minister said.
