Provincial distribution centres opened:

Essentials at cheap rates

Two distribution centres were opened last Friday in Uva and Southern Provinces by the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry under the program to establish distribution centres in every province to distribute Sathosa essential items among Multi Purpose Cooperative Societies.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has allocated Rs 900 million for this project. Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando said that these centres would be established covering all provinces including the Northern and the Eastern Provinces in the near future.

The aim of this initiative is to provide essential items without a shortage at cheaper rates. Eight essential items, namely sugar, rice, dhal, dried chili, salmon, green grams, Kadala (Brown Chickpea) and sprats are distributed to Multi Purpose Cooperative Societies through these centres.

The Minister noted that attention has also been directed to establish these centres in district level.
