CWE to sell 4m imported eggs

Cooperative and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando has directed C W E Chairman Eraj Fernando to issue to the market four million eggs imported to the country on January 3.

Accordingly, four million eggs will be sold through CWE centers in the country.

Wholesale price of an egg is marked at Rs 11 while retail price is Rs 12 each.

Even though poultry producers recently claimed that they could sell an egg for Rs 10, they have still not been able to do so.

Minister said that the present price of an egg in the market is between Rs 16 and Rs 16.50 so that the Government will continue importing eggs until the poultry producers reduce their market price.

The Minister requested the poultry producers not to exploit consumers.
