Heavy rains inundate over 30,000 houses

The incessant rains over the past fews days in the Ampara district has inundated over 30,000 houses and several schools in the Kalmunai, Samanthurai and Akkaraipattu Educational Zones.

Twelve schools were temporarily closed down in the Kalmunai zone after going under water.

Student and teacher turnout in the rest of the schools have also dropped, Kalmunai Zonal Director of Education M T M Thewfeek said. Ampara Government Agent Sunil Kannagara who went on an inspections tour of the affected areas said there are only three Camps in Vinayagapuram, Navatkudah, Vatchikkuda in the Alayadivemby Divisional Secretariat areas and one at Periyaneelavanai in the Kalmunai DS Divisions.

Those in the camps have been supplied with cooked meals by the Divisional Secretaries of the Divisions.

The Government Agent also instructed the Divisional Secretaries to look after their other needs as well.
