Clifford Cup boxing meet:

All favourites won their first round bouts convincingly on the opening day of the 83rd Amateur Boxing Association men’s and women’s Clifford Cup meet which commenced at the Sugathadasa indoor stadium in Colombo yesterday.

The meet was earlier scheduled to be worked off in December but was postponed due to last year’s Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games held in India and China respectively.

This meet will be open only to the winners and the runners-up of novices, Intermediate, Stubbs Shield and winners of the Junior National Championships and all other boxers who have participated in any major tournaments conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) of Sri Lanka.

The men’s tournament has attracted a total of 125 competitors while a total of 42 boxers will compete in the women’s tournament.

The men’s bouts will consist of three rounds of three minutes each and the women’s bouts will feature four rounds of two minutes each.

The championship will be concluded with the finals on Thursday at the same venue.
