Move to develop Mahamevuna park

The National Heritage Ministry has drawn up a plan to develop the Mahamevuna park in Anuradhapura to preserve its historical significance, a National Heritage Ministry spokesman told the Daily News. Minister Jagath Balasooriya has disclosed this at a meeting held to discuss the future implementation of the Anuradhapura city project at the National Heritage Ministry recently.

The Minister has requested his officers to commence and complete the first stage of construction of this project before the Vesak Full Moon Poya day. The Civil Defence Department has agreed to supply the labour.

The Ministry has planned this proposal according to the present needs of the city. The Ministry will establish a good road system to the Anuradhapura city. This road system will help ease the traffic congestion in the sacred city.

The authorities have noted that the trade outlets and vehicle park have damaged the sanctity, pristine beauty and archaeological scenery. The ministry will remove these unplanned buildings in the sacred city, a Ministry source said.
