Sparkling century by Hemal

Dharmaraja College skipper Hemal Munaweera scored the first century in school cricket for 2011 when he stroked a brilliant 103 not out in their schools under 19 cricket tournament match against Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa which began at the Sir Albert Peiris Stadium, Wennappuwa yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.30 am.

The Rajans taking first lease of the wicket were off to a poor start losing their first four wickets for 67 and later the score slumped to 110 for 8.

But skipper Hemal Munaweera rescued the side with a facing saving innings which was a mixture of caution and aggression and he had a good ally in 15 year old spinner Deneth Lanka who rendered very useful support from the other end. This pair put on 101 in an unbroken stand for the ninth wicket.

Hemal Munaweera in scoring his maiden century hit 2 sixers and 9 fours in his 130 ball knock. Medium pacer Chamara Fernando took 4 for 64. Rain and bad light put an early end to the match.

Dharmaraja College 211 for 8 in 72 overs (Sarath Gunasekera 39, Hemal Munaweera 103 not out, Viraj Kempitigoda 15, Deneth Lanka 17 n.o., Chamara Fernando 4 for 64).
