LG polls under present system

Local Government Elections Amendment (Draft) Bill will be presented to Parliament tomorrow, said Prime Minister D M Jayaratne when he met the Malwatta and Asgiriya Maha Nayake Theras yesterday.

He also said that the Opposition would have an opportunity to study the Bill and present their objections, if any so that a better election system could be established in the country.

However, the next local government election would be held under the existing system a term of office of local government bodies expires in March 2010, he added. The Prime Minister received the blessings of both Nayake Theras.
