Ancient temple neglected
Viharage and other buildings in poor state:

Hikkaduwa, Hettigoda, Thilakarama ancient temple is perishing due to
the lack of attention of authorities.
The viharage and all other buildings are in a poor state.
The Viharage roof has been destroyed due to the exposure to elements.
Buildings of this temple have not been repaired for a long time. The
frescoes belonging to the Kandy period have been disfigured due to rain
water seepage.
All beams and rafters are decayed.
The building walls are cracked, D Amarajeewa de Silva Rajakaruna, a
resident of the area told the Daily News.
Chief Incumbent Ven Welivitiye Somathilaka Thera requests the
authorities to renovate the building to protect its ancient glory.
Hikkaduwa, Hettigoda, Thilakarama ancient temple is about
240-years-old. It was built in 1770.
This temple was the home to most Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera.
The birth place of Ven Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera is situated
close to this temple. |
