Pakistan big onions arrive today

Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando said that the first consignment of big onions from Pakistan will arrive in the island today.

“Around 150 containers carrying big onions will arrive in the country today,” he said.

Fernando told the media that steps would be taken to distribute the big onion stocks to the private sector as well.

“We hope to distribute these stocks not only to Lak Sathosa outlets but even to the private sector to prevent the price of big onions from escalating,” he said.

“Attempts by an organized mafia to increase the prices will be averted with the arrival of big onions to the country. We expect that the price of a kilo of big onions will be reduced to around Rs 120 from the current Rs 160,” the Minister said.

He said certain traders including several super markets were selling big onions at a higher price to make profits.
