Fireworks injuries down this year

Media campaign pays off, only 11 injured:

Injuries caused by fireworks during the dawn of New Year have dropped compared to last year. Only 11 people were treated at the National Hospital for injuries from fireworks, Colombo National Hospital Director Dr Hector Weerasinghe said. The Director said following media campaigns during the past six years on firework related incidents, the number of accidents caused by fireworks have reduced.

Meanwhile, 322 persons were treated at the National Hospital for injuries sustained due to fireworks, road accidents, quarrels and other domestic incidents on New Year’s day, Dr Weerasinghe said.

Ninety four were injured in road accidents. Sixty two persons were admitted to the National Hospital before December 31 midnight while 32 were admitted after midnight, he said.

Forty persons were treated at the National Hospital following domestic incidents and quarrels.

Of the persons who sought treatment at National Hospital, 121 are receiving further treatment.
