What
would you do if you are accidentally left back at home by your family,
when the Nazis are killing your kind, the Jews? Would you stay well
hidden, hopeful they won’t find you or hope luck comes your way?
Ruth was to go to London before her parents, but bad luck visits her
and she is left behind. She hides at home, hoping to stay alive while
the Nazis are approaching her neighborhood. A family friend –Quin-comes
to her rescue, when he hears that Professor Berger has been sacked from
the university. Quin has only one way of rescuing Ruth and taking her
back to London with him. This is through a marriage of convenience,
which he promises to dissolve, once they arrive in London.
Once in London, she is enrolled in the same University as Quin
lectures; Ruth tries to avoid him, as they decided to not see each
other. However, things don’t work out as she wants them to.
To read or not: Definite must read! Once started, it’s hard to put
down!
Other romance novels by Ibbotson are A Song for Summer, The Secret
Countess and Magic Flutes. Interestingly, Ibbotson passed away this
year, after leaving Vienna during the Second World War, running away
from the Nazis and settling in England. - Bhagya Senaratne
Best of Saki
Malathi PERERA
Hector Hugh Munro - his pen name is Saki - was a British writer born
in 1870 and died at the age of 45 years. His bestseller book was 'The
Best of Saki' a fictional short story book, which became very famous in
1960s.
This writer is witty and in each story there is a sense of humour. In
'The Best of Saki' Graham Greene has made the forward saying 'they
dazzle and delight; while Tom Sharpe making the introduction state
'start a Saki story and you will finish it and start another...' Though
he wrote many books, 'The Best of Saki' became a famous literary work.
Once a person commenced to read a short story, Saki makes the reader
not to stop it in the middle, but makes the reader finish the story to
the end as no one can tell what happens at the end.
His style of writing belongs to Edwardian society and culture. I
stress the importance of reading these books to nowadays youngsters.
The parents should encourage their children to read them to make them
aware of the natural flow of the higher language.
In the book 'The Best of Saki' there are few touchy stories which
cannot be erased from a person's memory once read.
'The Open Window' is how a niece of a certain gentleman who comes to
village for some relaxation makes the man run out of the house suddenly
to the astonishment of the parents. Another story is where two men died
for nothing - just to save a picture getting burnt by the flame but not
flesh and blood of the lady in the house.
Saki has written 26 novels and short stories out of which 'The Best
of Saki' seals the hearts of a reader.
Pride of a school
Madhubhashini RATHNAYAKE
Bomiriya National School is a platform for the 'Little inventors' who
are wishing to change the world with their creative ideas. A bunch of
sprouting inventors in this school proves that the school is encouraging
them in creative activities, which means if they are abandoned by the
school they will not get opportunities to show their talents.
The inventions of the 'little inventors' in Bomiriya National School,
give evidence us in their talents. She is W Anjali Madhumali Sandipika,
studying in Grade Ten who invented an 'efficient firewood stove'.
Anything, like small pieces of firewood, coconut shells can be used
for this and waste of heat is very low.
And also it can be kept on a surface like tile and can be cooked.
There are three parts in this store which can be easily fixed.
P H K Jayashanka Dushan Abayadeva is another inventor, studying in
Grade 10, who has invented a 'coconut plucking machine'. By this,
coconut can be plucked easily and safely without climbing to a coconut
tree. His second invention is a 'new signal light system' which saves
cost and electricity.
L A Madhushika Divyanjali Athukorala in Grade Nine was successful in
inventing a 'cake slicer'.
These inventions have won places in competitions organised by
university of Colombo, University of Peradeniya and also Sri Lanka
Inventors' Commission.
V Dharshana Iran Champika de Silva, Principal of Bomiriya National
School and the teachers may be proud of these 'human resources' who are
to be engage in the development of our country.
