IAC, LLRC meets
The Inter Agency Committee (IAC) chaired by Attorney-General Mohan
Pieris and established to facilitate the implementation of the Interim
Recommendations of the Lessons Learnt & Reconciliation Commission (LLRC),
met with Members of the Commission on December 10, 2010.
The meeting took place consequent to a decision by the Committee at
its initial session on November 24.
As an outcome of the meeting, the following decisions have been
taken.
(a) Any material presented to the LLRC during its sessions, both in
Colombo and outside that may warrant further inquiry of investigation,
will be immediately referred by the Commission Secretariat to the
Chairman of the IAC;
(b) The avenues afforded by the widespread availability of
communication technology throughout the country, will be utilized, to
enable the next of kin to be kept continuously informed of the
whereabouts of those detainees who are family members.
(c) Every effort will be taken to ensure that necessary information
is available especially to the public in the former conflict affected
areas, concerning the rehabilitation and resettlement effort in the
North and the East;
(d) The permanent instructions given to the law enforcement
authorities concerning the collection of unauthorized weaponry
throughout the island will be reiterated.
The Inter Agency Committee will be continuing its work both through
formal sessions as well as through informal consultations, until such
time as the matters brought to the attention by the LLRC are resolved in
keeping with the Cabinet decision establishing the IAC, according to a
press release by the Govt Information Department. |
