Infant’s body found in labour room drain

Minor employees attached to the Nawalapaitiya base hospital who tried to clear a blockage in the sewer line of the hospital maternity labour room found a body of a baby boy clogged inside the sewer, yesterday.

Hospital sources said the body was that of a six to seven month old boy. Nawalapitiya Acting Magistrate Nayanananda Aluthgamage who held the magisterial inquiry at the scene ordered a post mortem examination and directed police to conduct investigations and arrest the suspects involved in dumping the body in the sewer. The post mortem was due to be held yesterday. Earlier too a body of an infant was found near the maternity ward of the hospital believed to have been thrown away through a window.
