EU delegation visits Ampara

A European Union Mission headed by its Director Asia and Central Asia - DEVCO Dirk Meganck was in the Ampara District recently to assess the progress of the EU funded various projects that are in the offing and completed in several parts of the area.

The team comprising of EU's First Counsellor - Head of Operations Willy Vandenberghe, Extenal Relations JorgePeydro - Aznar, Ubaldo Lorenzini and Program Manager Nusrath Ghazzali held discussions with District Secretary Sunil Kannangara on projects implemented by the EU.

The team visited the Ampara Compost Facility and Engineered landfill constructed under Environmental Remediation Program (ERP) at a cost of Rs 140 million as part of the E U Ampara Partnership.

The implementation of this project was carried out by UNOPS with the support of the Local Government Ministry and the operation and maintenance of this facility will be carried out by the management of Ampara Urban Council.

The team also inspected the clean-up program, Recycling Store, Waste Collection, Material recovery facility and the Machine 'Bailer'.

UNOPS Capacity Building Operations Manager Ana B Sacramento, Project Manager Celia Marques, SWM Specialist S Sivakumaran, Program Communication and Monitoring Officer R Suthakaran were also present.
