Two from Colombo, two from outstations top marks

A-L 2010 first places:

According to the Advanced Level Examination 2010 results issued by the Examinations Department, two male students and two female students have obtained first places in each four streams.

Dasun Upamal Kalugala of Pinnawala Central College, Rambukkana has obtained the first place in Biological Science stream while Viduranga Bandara Wijekoon of Royal College, Colombo has obtained first place in the Mathematics stream.

Aloka Wanamali Anthony of Kuliyapitiya Central College has become the first in Commerce stream while Shalomi Danial of Ladies College, Colombo the first in the Arts stream.

The results show, that students who obtained first places in Science and Commerce streams are from the outstations.

The first places in Mathematics and Arts streams were reported from Colombo District schools.

Speaking to the Daily News Asoka Wanamali Anthony who became island first in the Commerce stream said that she did educational activities eagerly without any persuasion by anyone.

She pointed out that she never postponed educational activities and had done those at that day itself. She appreciated the assistance of her teachers and family members in her studies. Her father is a building contractor and mother a retired teacher. Her brother is still schooling.

Shalomi Danial of Ladies College is residing in the Narahenpita area. She is also the only child of her family. Her father is an accountant and mother is a librarian. She had selected Economics, English and French for A-Ls as she likes learning languages.

"I used to study in the morning from around 5 am. When I study I did it up to the level best. Sometimes I studied with friends," Danial noted. She has taken part in many extra curricular activities such as drama competitions, essay competitions and so on. She was also a prefect and a girl guide at school.

Viduranga Bandara Wijekoon who came first in the Mathematics stream said he was astonished hearing that this achievement though he knew that he would get through the examination well. Wijekoon is the only child of his family. His father is a Deputy Educational Director while his mother is a teacher. According to him, he had obtained the third place in the Grade V scholarship examination in 2001.

Then he became the island sixth in the Ordinary Level examination getting nine A passes and one B pass.

He has done his studies with great dedication. "I hardly read newspapers and did not watch television until I finished my examination. However, I participated in extra curricular activities in school," Wijekoon said.

Dasun Upamal Kalugala of Pinnawala Central College said that he followed the instruction of his teacher when studying. He also said that he was confident that he would get through the examination but never thought of such a position. "My family members induced me a lot.

However I use my own way to study. Moreover I managed time." According to him he has participated in extra curricular activities in school. He was a school Prefect. His mother is a preschool teacher and father had passed away when he was studying in grade two.
