Highest rainfall in Kukulegama:
Floods affect over 105,000
More than 105,000 people have been affected following floods caused
by heavy rains during the last few days, Disaster Management Center (DMC)
sources said.
The DMC reported that the highest number of people affected by the
floods are from Mannar.
The total number of victims from Killinochchi and Mannar have risen
by over 8,000 and 1,900 since Tuesday.
Over 35,000 people from 8,471 families in Mannar and 21,564 people
from 5,628 families in Kilinochchi have been affected .
The DMC also reported that 105,833 people belonging to 26,786
families have been affected. Eight people were injured and three have
been killed following the bad weather during the past few days . Over
300 houses have been fully damaged and 3,795 houses have been partially
damaged and 2,170 people from the 450 families have been displaced, they
said.
The Disaster Management Ministry has released Rs 45 million to assist
flood victims.
The Meteorological Department said Kukulegama experienced the highest
rain fall of 89 mm during last 24 hours ending 8.30 am yesterday.
Puttalam experienced 84 mm . The department also predicted showers in
the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Southern provinces
today. The department also predicted fairly strong winds over the
Western slopes of the Central hills.
