Navy Commanders of seven
countries will visit Sri Lanka on December 7 to attend a
seminar to mark the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Sri
Lanka Navy, said Navy Media spokesman Captain Athula
Senarath.
They are Navy Commanders of
Australia, Bangladesh, India, The Maldives, Malaysia,
Pakistan and the UAE.
Apart from them, Naval
delegations from 21 countries and several foreign Naval
vessels will arrive in the country to attend ceremonies to
mark the Navy’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, he said. |
The Sri Lanka Navy which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year is
actively involved in the country’s national development effort following
the return of peace, said Navy Commander Vice Admiral Tisara
Samarasinghe.
Addressing the gathering at a ceremony at the Navy’s Rangala Camp,
the Navy Commander said however the Navy had not relaxed its high alert
on the security front since such relaxation would enable terrorism to
raise its head once again and hamper the hard won peace and freedom.
The Navy Commander who reviewed a traditional Navy parade and took
the salute at a special ground of honour accorded him, said the Navy can
be proud of the services it rendered to defeat terrorism alongside the
Army, the Air Force and other Defence Forces.
“We should remember that it was the leadership of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa and the guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa
which enabled us to defeat terrorism which plagued the country for 30
years,” he said.
Exhorting Navy personnel to make use of their past experiences to
better their future lives, Vice Admiral Samarasinghe said his thoughts
go out to all Security Forces personnel who made a joint endeavour to
defeat terrorism in this country and restore peace. |
