MoU to expand human security

Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United National Children's Fund (UNICEF) to launch a Human Security Trust Fund at the National Languages and Social Integration Ministry yesterday.

The project will also be assisted by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS).

'Securing better lives for Sri Lanka' was the main vision of the launching ceremony of the Human Security Trust Fund.

The ILO, UNDP and UNICEF joined hands to integrate a program for empowering conflict affected communities in North and East with the financial support of the Japanese Government.

Sri Lanka UNDP Deputy Country Director Razina Bilgrami said the equal access to justice project mainly focuses on conflict-affected groups, prisoners, estate workers, women and children.

The UNICEF said they work together with the Child Development Ministry, Probation and Child Care Service Department and the police to reach vulnerable children and women affected by the conflict.

Training for rural economic empowerment, labour based technology, livelihood recovery in conflict and disaster affected areas, social security and promotion of youth employment were key areas addressed by the ILO.

Japanese Ambassador Kunio Takahashi said that Japanese government will extend its help to Sri Lanka.
