Commemoration

Bodhi Puja by Thai Society
A Bodhi Puja and Pirith chanting organized by the Sri Lanka-Thailand

Lightning kills farmer

A resident in Kusumpokuna, Medirigiriya died after being struck by
lightning on Sunday afternoon while he was ploughing a paddy field with
the aid of a two wheel tractor.
Help find her family here
A Sri Lankan born girl who lives in Belgium wants your help to find
her birth family.
Shanika Lippert, 23, says that she was born to a Sri Lankan mother
named Disna Tharangani and has been adopted by a Belgian couple. "My
mother left me in the Salvation Army in Colombo when I was just nine or
six months old," Shanika says claming that her mother was forced to
leave her amid a family crisis she faced. According to Shanika's
records, her mother lived in Mirihana, when she was born.
Born on November 9, 1987, Shanika seeks any information that will
help her find her mother.

Free spectacles for students

The Health Ministry will provide spectacles free of charge to
students in the Southern Province.
The project is being launched under the 'Vision 2020' program, a
Southern Province Education Ministry official said.
The Southern Province Education Ministry has informed Principals to
provide information in this regard.
Vocational training for youth

The Youth Affairs Ministry will provide Vocational Training for
350,000 youths, Kurunegala District Youth Development Officer R M
Wasantha Fernando said.
There is a growing demand for trained youth for foreign employment.
Rs 144 million has been allocated for this and training courses will be
held at Youth Training Centres islandwide next year, Fernando said.
Boost for H'tota cashew cultivation

The Cashew Corporation will make arrangements to step up cashew
cultivation in the Hambantota District.
The Rs 9,500 subsidy per acre given to cashew cultivators have been
increased to Rs 25,000 to encourage cashew cultivators.
Cultivators have also been advised to grow green gram and ground nuts
to derive an income until they derive an income from cashew
cultivations.
It is expected to bring 50,000 acres of land under cashew cultivation
by 2016.
Cashew Corporation Deputy Chairman P Piyadasa said cashew requirement
in the country is 14,000 tons and only 12,000 tons are produced at
present.
Prawn prices down

The price of prawns in the Eastern Province has come down to Rs 500 a
kilo.
A kilo of prawns was earlier sold between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000.
Fishermen said that they now have free access to fish in Kanthankudi,
Kaluwanchikudi, Walachchanai and Batticaloa lagoons due to the peaceful
atmosphere in the area.
