Inaugural squash tourney at Nalanda
The inaugural Invited School squash tournament 2010 is held from
December 3 to 8 at the Nalanda College new sqush court which was built
at a cost of Rs seven million by old Nalandian Kassapa Mahendra de
Silva. These delails were revealed at a media briefing held at the
Nalanda College language centre on Thursday evening.
The leading squash playing schools- St. Sylvester's College Kandy,S
Thomas' Mount Lavinia, St Joseph's ,St Peter's, DS Senanayaka and
Nalanda College of Colombo are participating in the tourney.
Matches are held under nine,11,13,15,17 and 19 age groups . The all
round champion school will be awarded the Nalanda Senior Old Boys'
Challenge Trophy while the champions of each age group will be awarded
certificates and madals.
It was further reveled that Nalanda College under 17 players emerged
runners up at the All Island Junior Squash Tournament 2010 since its
inception within an year.
Addressing the media The Nalandian Principal Ranjith Jayasundara
emphasized the importance of the introduction of squash for the well
being of the students and their willingness to help other schools to
enter the sport. The chairman of Squash Federation of Sri Lanka Oliver
Guruge explained how squash was introduced to Sri Lanka and its brief
history. He further added that there was a vast opportunity for students
who excel in squash in receivening foreign scholarships.
Headed by Rear Admiral Sarath Rathnakeerthi (Retd) the tourney is a
joint venture of Senior and Junior Old Boys' Association of Nalanda
College, Old Nalandians' Sports Club and the Squash Federation of Sri
