Awards ceremony

A media felicitation and awards ceremony organized by Dharga Town Environment Foundation will be held at Mihiripenna, Beruwala on November 28 at 2 p.m.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne will be the Chief Guest. Parliamentarian M. S. M. Aslam and Beruwala Pradesheeya Sabha Chairman Prasanna Sanjeewa and Pradesheeya Sabha Opposition Leader A. R. M. Badurdeen will also be present.

Dharga Town Environment Foundation organizer A. H. A. Marikkar said correspondents of all newspapers including the Daily News will be presented special awards at this ceremony in recognition of the service they had rendered to resolve the garbage problem in Dharga Town by highlighting the issue in their newspapers.


Fined for possessing hashish

A 30-year-old Female French national found guilty of keeping seven grammes of hashish in her possession was fined Rs. 10,000 by the Matara Additional Magistrate Lasith Chamath Madanayake. The Matara Police produced the suspect in court after arresting her at a hotel in Polhena. Another suspect found guilty of possessing 192 drams of illicit liquor was fined Rs. 25,000. Akuressa police prosecuted.Meanwhile a person found guilty of transporting sand without a permit in a tipper was fined Rs. 50,000 by Additional Magistrate Lasith Chamath Madanayake. Akuressa police prosecuted.


Met Dept predicts more rains

The Met Department has forecast heavy rains in the coastal areas while the Northern and North Central parts of the country could experience occasional showers today.

Thunder showers will also develop at several places inland during the afternoon and could spread to the coastal area.

Vavuniya received a heavy rain fall in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am yesterday.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities, the Met Department said.


Temporary shelter for landslide hit

Residents in 13 houses in Heltenna and Wewatenna were evacuated and provided temporary accommodation in safe areas following a landslide caused by heavy rains on Wednesday, Kandy Disaster Management Co-ordinating officer Major Kamal Herath said.He said six houses were damaged in the earthslips. Meanwhile, 10 houses in Manikkumbura have been submerged by flood waters of the Pinga Oya. Several minor earthslips were also reported along the Kandy-Kurunagala main road.


Loiterers, drunkards fined

Six suspects who pleaded guilty to loitering in the Ragama town without reason and also under the influence of liquor were fined a total of Rs 9,000 by Gampaha Additional Magistrate Indika Attanayake Wednesday.


Pearl Jubilee celebrations

The Pearl jubilee of the Institute of Physics, Sri Lanka (IPSL) will be held on November 27 at 2.00 pm at the Colombo University, Science Faculty, King George Hall. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane will be the Chief Guest and Colombo University Vice-Chancellor Prof Kshanika Hirimburegama will be the Guest of Honour.

IPSL will felicitate retired and Senior Physics professors and Sri Lankan physicists over 60 years who have rendered a yeomen service to the development of the field of Physics in Sri Lanka.

Nearly 100 schoolchildren who excelled in Sri Lankan Physics Olympiad Competition-2010, and Sri Lankan Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad Competition-2010 conducted by the IPSL will be awarded with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at this ceremony.

Awards to winners of the 2010 annular solar eclipse photography competition will also be presented. The Mailvaganam Memorial Oration on 'Non Conventional Renewable Energy Options' will also be held on the same day.


SLPA conference

The 55th Annual Conference of the Sri Lanka Press Association will be held on November 27 from 10 am at the Hotel Ranmuthu, Colpety.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Dr Rajitha Senarathne will be the Chief Guest.


Thomian Colours Nite

The awarding of colours for 2010 for students of S Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia who have participated in 14 sports disciplines will be held on December 3, 2010 at 5 pm at the College Hall.

Former Thomian ruggerite and Ceylinco Life Insurance CEO Renganathan will be the chief guest.Thomian Blue will be conferred on three boys for their excellence at rugby, rowing and karate this year too. This is an award made for school boys who represent the country while in school.


Memorial service

The Colombo Chetty Association of Sri Lanka will hold its Annual Memorial Service on November 27 at 6.00 pm at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, New Chetty Street, Colombo 13.


Lecture

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be held on November 29 at 5 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The title of the lecture is 'The Supramundane Society of Buddhism' presented by Prof Oliver Abeynayake.

The lecture is open to the public.

Bus collision injures 15

Fifteen people were injured in an accident at Padeniya in the Wariyapola Police Division last morning. A private bus which was plying from Anuradhapura had crashed into another private been coming from the opposite direction.


Illicit gem mine raided

Hatton Police Special Operations Unit raided an illicit gem mine on the banks of the Keselgamu Oya in Norwood Wednesday and arrested four suspects along with three water pumps and other mining equipment.


Ata Sil, Meditation program

Ajahn Brahmavamso will conduct an Ata Sil and a Meditation program at the BMICH on Duruthu Poya day, January 19. Those interested can obtain passes from Narada Centre, Sarana Road and Dharmavahini Foundation, 138/1 S de S Jayasinghe Mawatha, Nugegoda from November 29.

Foundation laying

A foundation stone will be laid to construct a conference hall for the Anuradhapura Central College today at 9.01 am under the patronage of Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.

The conference hall will be constructed at a cost of Rs 40 million.

A North-South Working People’s Solidarity Conference will be held at Vembady Girls’ High School, Jaffna on November 27, 2010 at 10 am under the patronage of Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya General Secretary Leslie Devendra.

Northern Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri, SLFP Jaffna District Organizer Angajan Ramanadan, Jaffna Mayor Yogeshwari Padmakularajah and SLBC Jaffna Service Manager Lakshman Perera will also participate at the event.


WPC budget

The Wayamba Provincial Council budget presentation will be held on November 29, 30, December 1 and 2.

The public gallery will be restricted only for invitees, Wayamba Provincial Council Secretary S R A Samarakoon said.

The invitees who attend the gallery will not be allowed to carry mobile phones and tight security will be provided by the police. The budget will be presented to the Council by Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe.


Activity Day

The annual Activity Day 2010 of Giggles International Montessori will be held on November 26 from 2 pm to 6.00 pm at the Sugathadasa Indoor Sports Complex. Around 500 children will perform depicting the specific identity of individual countries of Asia.

National Child Protection Authority of Sri Lanka, Anoma chairperson Dissanayaka will be the chief guest.


Jaffna youth learning Sinhala

The youth in Jaffna are showing special interest in learning Sinhala language.

At the request of Government servants, school leavers the 513 Brigade under the patronage of Army Civil Affairs office has started, a special Sinhala language teaching centre at Manipay with nearly 100 students. The learners will be issued certificates on the successful completion of the course.

Now Sinhala is taught in Government and private schools. A Buddhist priest is in charge of the Sinhala Department at Jaffna Hindu College.

In many other schools Tamils who are competent to teach Sinhala are teaching Sinhala language.


More women, youth representation

The Federation of Sri Lankan Local Government Authorities (FSLLGA) is attempting to increase the representation of women and youth in the upcoming Local Government Elections.

The Federation has launched a program to encourage women and youth to contest the upcoming elections and engage in social service as active participants in society. The Federation has organized a workshop from December 3 to 4 at the Green Grass hotel in Jaffna. Over 22 young Pradeshiya Sabha members from each province will participate. SAB
