EA launches electronic waste management program
Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa launched an electronic
waste management project to ensure an electronic waste free Sri Lanka.
Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and 14 leading companies
engaged in Information technology, Telecommunication and Home appliances
also participated in the project.
Sri Lanka Telecom, Mobitel, Dialog, Etisalat, Hutch and Lanka Bell
representing the field of telecommunication, Singer and Abans
representing field of Home appliances, Metropolitan, E-wis and ABC trade
and investment from the Office equipment supplies and Geo cycle and
Green link from the field of bulk electronic waste dispose are joining
this program.
Explaining on future plans of the E-waste management program CEA
Chairman Charitha Herath said that it is completely an
environmental-friendly program. He emphasized the necessity of
controlling the damage to environment due to hazardous waste.
Electronic wastes have to be submitted to collection centers instead
of being disposed haphazardly to achieve this target, Herath said.
Electronic waste are separately recycled by companies.
This was started with the signing agreements by the CEA Chairman and
CEOs of companies.
Herath said information on electronic waste categories and places of
collecting can obtain from the National Information Center over Hotline
1919.
He said all facilities have been arranged to dispose electronic waste
in a proper manner.
