Rajarata undergrads granted bail
Anuradhapura central
Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Darshika Wimalasiri ordered the 17
university students who were arrested last month be released on bail.
Mihinthalaya police arrested the students for assaulting students and
damaging university properties at the Rajarata University.
They were charged with forcible entrance to the examination hall and
assaulting students who were sitting their semester end examinations
during the protest that was being conducted against the university
administration.
These students were protesting against the Rajarata University
administration.
They assaulted five female students who were sitting their end
semester examinations two weeks ago despite the protest.
The Chief Magistrate warned the students not to get involved in any
unethical or violent activity in and outside the university. She further
noted that students who have come to study should not disrupt the
academic activities of the educational institutions.
The Magistrate further said university students should be polite and
decent and work for the progress of the country. The hopes of innocent
parents should not be broken after entering the university, she said.
The Magistrate issued notice on another five students involved in the
attack to appear before the court with their parents together with these
students at the next date of hearing.
