Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa inaugurated a new trade complex at Norris Canal Road, Borella for pavement hawkers yesterday. Housing and Engineering Minister Wimal Weerawansa is also in the picture.

He urged the traders not to exploit innocent patients but to engage in a good business with a fair profit. This trade complex was also constructed in response to a request made by pavement hawkers who had no permanent place to do business, Minister Rajapaksa said. The Minister said it is the traders’ duty to maintain a transparent system in handing over the stalls and prevent discrimination.

Addressing the gathering Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said Colombo district parliamentarians have been demanding for some time this type of constructions which would benefit Colombo city residents.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is keen to beautify the Colombo city without inconveniencing citizens, he said.

“This trade complex will help hospital employees and patients from all around the country,” he said.

Technology and Research Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana, Disaster Management Minister A H M Fowzie, Housing and Engineering Minister Wimal Weerawansa, Parliamentarians Thilanga Sumathipala, Duminda Silva, Colombo Municipal Council Special Commissioner Omar Kamil and Colombo General Hospital Director Hector Weerasinghe also participated.
