The music of the Bach family takes centre stage at the Colombo
Chamber Music Society’s next musical foray. In addition to the
obligatory J S Bach, the CMSC is pleased to present works by Johann
Christian as well as a rarity by Wilhelm Friedemann.
The centrepiece and best known works to be performed is the Double
Violin Concerto of Johann Sebastian. It is one of the most beautiful
baroque concerti ever written. Its interweaving violin parts are
performed by two of the CMSC’s front desk players - Satish Casie Chetty
and Sogo Kanamori.
The great composer’s 209th Cantata “He does not know what sorrow is”,
in five movements, features the Guildhall-trained soprano Preshanthi
Navaratnam. This secular cantata was written possibly as a farewell to a
young marine officer by the name of Johann Matthias Gesner. It is aimed
to intrigue, delight and enrapture in equal measure. The Bach concert
will be held on December 2 (Thursday) at 7:30 pm at the Lionel Wendt
Theatre, Colombo. Tickets available at the Lionel Wendt. The Chamber
Music Society of Colombo performs under its artistic director, Lakshman
Joseph de Saram. The concert is sponsored in part by the Embassy of
Germany in Colombo. |
