Teacher receives salary without teaching

A lady teacher attached to a school in the Kandy Education Zone has obtained a total salary of

Rs 2,244,816 for a period of 119 months without teaching a single subject in school an audit report revealed.

Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa disclosing this, said another lady teacher in the same zone has received a salary for 18 months without teaching a subject. He has now directed Provincial Education authorities to recover this money from the relevant teachers.

The Governor who was addressing a meeting held at Hillwood College Kandy, yesterday to mark the presentation of Buddhist statutes and texts to schools in the Central Province to mark the President's birthday and swearing in for the second term said 184 teachers had sought his sanction to engage in foreign trips. Almost 99 percent of them were for pilgrimage and other private reasons.

Since teachers taking leave during the third school term would greatly hinder the education of children he has decided not to grant any such requests during the 3rd school term in future.
