Undergrads allocations to double

Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake said the yearly allocation for a single university student would be increased from Rs 164,000 to 241,000 from next year.

The Minister said the higher education sector will undergo dramatic changes in the coming years to create students who can face future challenges in the modern world.

He was speaking at the opening of a swimming pool at the Sri Jayawardenapura University Monday.

Minister Dissanayake said more funds will be allocated to upgrade facilities in the university system to suit the modern society.

Modernization of university education system is of prime importance and assistance from the academia, non academic staff and students are required to make this endeavour a success.

The Minister said the proposal for the construction of a swimming pool complex in the country's largest university was mooted by Sri Jayawardenapura University Alumni Association President Former Minister Mahinda Wijesekera.

He added that the Jaffna University will receive two faculties soon.

"We are planning to set up Agriculture and Engineering faculties in the Jaffna University," he added.
