Open career day at ACBT

An open career day was organized by the ACBT Student Council recently for the students of the college who were reading for the Bachelor of Business Administration as well as Bachelor of IT degrees and students from diploma, associate as well as bachelor's level.

The career day was held with the purpose of giving students the opportunity of exploring prospects for employment in IT and business fields and to help them to progress in the desired direction of their career options.

The program was held at ACBT and enabled participants to meet with corporate representatives face to face and discuss current issues pertaining to employment and career progression.

It provided the participating students, the chance to appreciate one's aptitude and personal traits which are important considerations in selecting one's career path.

Several leading organization in the corporate world such as Brandix Lanka Limited, MAS Holdings, Ceylon Tobacco Company PLC, Expolanka Teas (Pvt.) Ltd, MBSL Insurance Company, Sunrise Global Logistics, Job Envoy, Innodata Isogen Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd., Nations Trust Bank, and Fonterra Brands Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd were also present at this career day and shortlisted students for permanent positions in their companies which ranged from Management Trainees to Assistant Managers of Departments.

Some of them offered Internship programs for suitable candidates.

Internship programs were for a period of three months, six months or one year depending on the nature of the internship offered.

Some of these organizations rated ACBT students as 'the best lot of candidates interviewed' by them to date.

This is the third successful career day held by the college.

The first two career days were organized solely for the Final Year Business Edge students.

Business Edge is a special course that is part of the Business degree program at ACBT which is designed to give students the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in business ensuring that they are 'job ready' when they graduate from college.

This course equips students to identify, describe, analyze and resolve real business problems.

Participation of more than 200 number of students witnessed the success of this event.

It also introduced the students to the many career opportunities available to them.

Positive feedback was also received from participating organizations, who viewed this event as a good recruitment opportunity.


Etisalat boosts cyber community world

Jumping on board the exciting universes of the cyber world, Etisalat Lanka will switch on as telecommunications partner for Gamer.lk, for the next year. Championing the cause of competitive on-line gaming, the Etisalat 'Hang-out' will be host to many cyber-competitions in Colombo, Kandy and Polonnaruwa in the year to come. The Etisalat hang-out serves as a free of charge hub for young adults to surf the Internet, watch movies, play video and cyber games. This in turn will not only encourage Sri Lankans to be a part of the fast emerging and evolving cyber-universe, but also serve in bringing together the existing Gaming community and the Hang-out members. It will further enable Etisalat to foster a long-term relationship with Sri Lanka's gaming community and enter the revolutionary sphere of e-gaming, which is fast establishing itself on an international platform.

Etisalat Director Dumindra Ratnayaka said there is huge a potential for Sri Lanka's cyber athletes to compete on an international platform, "Etisalat are thrilled to be a part of promoting a competitive gaming atmosphere in Sri Lanka and paving the way for prospective cyber athletes to learn, contend and enjoy," he said. "We were the telecommunications partners for the Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2010" (SLGC '10) which was an absolute hit and we hope to partner Gamer.lk in enabling many more e-competitions in future," he said.

Etisalat logged on as the telecommunications sponsor for SLGC '10 as the country's elite gamers gathered to battle it out on-line in Colombo and for the first time in Kandy, seeing a record high of 1000 participants engaging in fierce Cyber combat to win the title of Sri Lanka's Cyber Champion 2010. The event also hosted Sri Lanka's inaugural international exhibition match, where the Maldives national team played against the SLGC' 10 champions, in which Sri Lanka claimed victory. The action detonated at the preliminary regional encounters with the grand finals at Infotel 2010.


Health Ministry lauds Janashakthi project

The Health Ministry recently held a felicitation to thank those who have rallied around and helped in the uplift of the Colombo Eye Hospital. Janashakthi Insurance PLC whose project whereby over 100 signage boards were installed at vantage points of the hospital, came in for special commendation by the Ministry.

Deputy Health Minister Mahinda Amaraweera presents the special certificate of appreciation to Janashakthi’s Marketing Activations Senior Assistant Manager Kalum Weerasinghe. Colombo Eye Hospital Director Dr Sisira Liyanage looks on.

Deputy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera thanked Janashakthi for coming forward to facilitate the hospital's service levels with the installation of clear signage, which had undoubtedly made the hospital a more organized place.

Deputy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera also presented a special certificate of appreciation to Janashakthi for this laudable project in the presence of the Colombo Eye Hospital Director Dr Sisira Liyanage and other high-ranking officials from the Colombo Eye Hospital and the Health Ministry.

Around 3,000 to 4,000 people, come to the Colombo Eye Hospital every day. The absence of proper signage has been both confusing and of great inconvenience to these people, both patients and visitors. Apart from the main name board of the hospital, the new signage directs people to counters and wards and other important locations in a very methodical and easy-to-understand manner. Both patients and visitors have reacted positively with favourable comments all round.

The Colombo Eye Hospital Director Dr Sisira Liyanage thanked JIPLC for coming forward to facilitate the hospital's service levels with the installation of clear signage. "It has facilitated easier movement within the hospital premises with patients and visitors spending far less time asking around. We are grateful to JIPLC for this very laudable gesture which undoubtedly benefits thousands of people everyday," he said.

Health Education and Public Relations Nursing Officer Nadee Rajakaruna said, "Janashakthi coming forward to help us was a blessing. Visitors to the hospital wasted a lot of time in the past asking for directions. Getting around is now much easier, thanks to Janashakthi."

Janashakthi's Marketing Head Paddy Weerasekera said, "I'm happy to say that the importance and success of this project at the Colombo National Hospital have both inspired and spurred us to similar successful projects at the Anuradhapura teaching hospital and Point Pedro main hospital. This has, in turn, greatly benefited both the thousands of patients and visitors in those areas. Parallely we plan to venture into more such projects in the near future."


PCH introduces IT Supermarket

LG launches 'Speech Washing Machine'

Media Minister visits Photo Technica stall

A photography exhibition and trade fair, was organized by the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka to celebrate their 60th anniversary.

This was held recently at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre in Colombo.

The chief guest of the occasion, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, paid a special visit to the Photo Technica stall at the exhibition.

Minister Rambukwella, whose hobby is photography, is a long-standing customer of Photo Technica.
