DSS and Zahira - boys joint champions

It was a case of joint champions at the boys and girls all island
under 13 hockey championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey
Association and the Kandy District Schools Hockey Association concluded
at the Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy yesterday.
The first final to be played was in the girls championship in which
Sri Sangamitta Girls College, Matale held Janadhipathi Vidyalayala,
Nawala to thrilling one-all draw.
Janadhipathi Vidyalaya who had the better of the exchanges drew first
blood early in the game through centre forward Samadhi Madura. But
seconds before the short whistle Sangamitta Vidyalaya equalized through
centre forward Sandaruwani Jayaratne with the ball deflecting into the
boards off the stick of a defender.
The second half saw a furious battle with both teams striving hard to
score the decider but the defence put up by both teams were virtually
impregnable.
Janadhipathi Vidyalaya were awarded three penalty corners but they
could not convert them into goals. For Sangamitta Balika Vidyalaya
Nawanjana Ekanayake, Sachithra Sandaruwani, Hishani Dhanapola and
Sandaruwani Jayaratne played well.
For Janadhipathi Vidyalaya Dulanjali Sandanika, Nishali Sepala and
Kavishka Viranjani played well. In the deciding match for the third
place Musaeus College beat St Anthony’s Girls College, Kandy 1-0. But
the Antonian girls played this match under protest as three players from
the Musaeus team did not have valid document to prove their identity.
In the semi-finals Sangamitta BV beat Seetha Devi BV 1-0. In the
other semi-final Janadhipathi Vidyalaya beat Musaeus College 1-0.
Quarter-finals: Musaeus College beat Seetha Devi BV 1-0, Janadhipathi
Vidyalaya beat Hewaheta Central College 4-0, St Anthony’s Girls College
beat Yasodara Vidyalaya 2-0 on penalty strokes, Sangamitta Balika
Vidyalaya beat Panadura Balika Vidyalaya 2-0.
Boys championship
In the finals of the boys championship two unbeaten teams clashed and
D S Senanayake College held Zahira College, Matale to a scoreless draw.
The finals turned out to be a big farce as it commenced in
semi-darkness and concluded in darkness with the ball hardly could be
seen. St Benedict’s College, Kotahena clinched the third place defeating
Ananda College 1-0 with Nirmal Dias scoring the winning goal for the
Bens.
Semi-finals:
D S Senanayake College beat St Benedict’s College 3-2 on penalty
stroke and Zahira College, Matale beat Ananda College 3-0.
Quarter finals:
Ananda College beat Nalanda College 1-0 on penalty strokes, St
Benedict’s College beat Royal College 1-0, Zahira College, Matale beat
Maris Stella College 3-0, D S Senanayake beat Isipatana College 1-0. |
