The 22nd National Youth Sports Festival:
Wanniarachchi wins Gold in Discus Throw

T S Wanniarachchi added one more gold medal to the Galle District
team when he updated record books, throwing the discus to a distance of
13.59 metres in the over 20 men's final at the Jayatillake Ground in
Nawalapitiya yesterday. That was one of the three new meet records which
were produced yesterday while two other age group records were also
shattered on the first day of the 22nd National Youth Sports Festival.

The second meet record which was lowered yesterday when Airman from
Matale District, Nipuna Nirmal Weerasekera became the first under 20
athlete in the National Youth Games' history to clear 2.00 metres in the
u-20 men's high jump. The previous record was held by Madushka Milan who
represented Colombo District and cleared 1.94 metres in 2009.
Madushani Siriwardena who represented Anuradhapura District was the
third meet record holder yesterday. She cleared 1.65 meters in the under
20 women's high jump final. Madushani was well ahead of second placed K
P T Hemamali of Kurunegala District who also finished ahead of the
previous record of 1.58 meters held by M Nikeshala when she cleared 1.59
meters.
Sanjuna Sumanaweera, the 16-year-old athlete who is still schooling
at the Royal Institute Nugegoda, became the first record breaker at the
22nd edition of the games when he threw distance of 13.97 metres in the
under 20 men's shot putt yesterday.
Sumanaweera bettered the previous age group record of 13.43 meters
for the under 20 category held by Mohommed Fahim of Matale District and
in 2008. Sumanaweera is also the national record holder for shot putt
event in several age categories in addition to the under-20 age group.
Gayan, Madumali best spikers
Gayan Premarathna of Puttalam District and Wasana Madumali of
Trincomalee District were adjudged best men's and women's spikers.
Kegalle District emerged men's volleyball champions when they
defeated Puttalam District in the final. The men's final gave the
spectators what they were just looking for, the thrill of sports and a
very tight game.
Both teams looked outstanding and because of that the game went till
four rounds. First round ended in Puttalam's favour as 23-25 but the
Kegalle fought back hard to win the next three rounds 25-20, 39-37,
25-17 to grab the men's volleyball championship.
In the women's final, Trincomalee defeated Kalutara district in a
three setter (25-11, 25-17, 25-13) quite easily. The organizers of the
meet will present a car as the grand prize for the first Sri Lanka
record breaker in this year's meet but so far no one has succeeded.
Badulla soccer champs
Badulla District emerged soccer champions after beating Kegalle
District 1-0 in the final played at Jayathillake Ground.
Chamila Weerasekera successfully converted a penalty and scored the
point in the first half to take an early lead.
