Kandy soccerite passes away

The oldest footballer in Kandy I L Abdul Salam passed away yesterday, at the age of 92 and his Janaza will take place at 9.30 am today at Muslim burial grounds Mahiyawa.

Salam nana as he was fondly called, was an old boy of St Anthony's College, he was a top footballer during his days at St Anthony's College and later played for Green Field Football Club, Young Stars Sports Club and Kandy District as a crack center forward. He did lot of service for the promotion of football in Kandy. An ardent supporter of Kandy Sports Club, he never missed a rugger match and has seen Kandy Sports Club in action for seventy five years, last year he was seen at the Clifford Cup Final at Nittawela.

He was the son of late Idroos Lebbe of Kandy, Salam was a prominent businessman in Kandy, he was the proprietor of Salam and Sons and Royal Electricals. He leaves his wife, seven sons and three daughters and several grand children.
