Buddha statue distribution

A program to distribute Buddha statues and religious books among all schools in the Central Province has been organized by Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa to mark President Mahinda Rajapaksa's 65th birthday.

The Governor said this is in keeping with the Mahinda Chintana program to promote a disciplined society.

The distribution of Buddha statues and religious books among schools in the Kandy Education Zone will be held at the Hilwood College hall, Kandy on November 16 at 2 p.m.

The distribution among schools in the Gampola Zone will be held at the Gampola St Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya hall on November 22.


Five drug peddlers nabbed

The Valachchenai police in an anti narcotic drive on Monday arrested five suspects including a woman peddler who was in possession of 1.600 kg of ganja powder and several small packets of the drug.

They were due to be produced in Court.

Investigations are continuing directed by Valachchenai police OIC K A J S Kodisinghe.


Drama

A short drama festival organized by the Swami Vipulananda Fine Arts Institute of the Eastern University which began at the Institutes Rajadurai hall on Monday will continue daily for 41 days.


Customs office for Jaffna

A Customs office will be opened in Jaffna next year. This would be a great help to residents who have to travel to Colombo spending a lot of money to clear their parcels from abroad. This piece of good news was conveyed by Postal Ministry Secretary Asoka Jayasekera on his recent three day visit to Jaffna.


Leave cancelled

Director General of Health Services Dr. Ajith Mendis in a special circular yesterday directed all heads of hospitals and health institutes islandwide not to grant leave to nursing staff unless it is due to an unavoidable circumstance.

The Director General has also sought a list of nurses who take leave today. Dr. Mendis has stated that the management of particular hospital or medical institution should ensure that the provision of healthcare facilities to the patients are properly carried out.


Talk

Paul Kriangyet Piyawannas will deliver a public talk in English on “Buddhist Conflict resolution in economics aspects” at the meeting of the Servants of Buddha Society on Saturday November 13 at 4.30 pm at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Medical camp

A free medical camp for the benefit of the members of ‘Ranaviru’ families belonging to ‘Gemunu’ Regiment would be held at the Southland Ladies College, Galle, next week.

The event would be held under the guidance of ‘Seva Vanitha’ Chairman of Gemunu Regiment Chintha Udumalagala and under the direction of the ‘Gemunu’ Regiment head Major General S Udumalagala.


The ‘Untamed road’ launch

Dr Lalith Ekanayake’s book, ‘Untamed Road’: A visual miscellany of the Sri Lankan wilderness will be launched on November 11 at 4.00 pm at the Harrold Peiris Gallery, Lionel Wendt, Colombo 7.

The book showcasing 140 full colour photographs will feature Lanka’s exotic wildlife heritage.

There will also be a wildlife photographic exhibition at the same venue from November 12-14.


World YMCA, YWCA Week

The Young Men’s Christian Association of Colombo and the Young women’s Christian Association of Colombo will celebrate the Annual “World YMCA and YWCA Week if Prayer and World Fellowship” from November 14 to 20. The theme for this year is “Women Crating a Safe World”.

The inaugural “Communion Service” will be held at the YMCA Chapel, 39, Bristol Street, Colombo 1, on Sunday, November 14 at 9 am.


Concert

The Kingston College International (Mutwal Branch) will hold its annual concert of pre-school and upper school on Thursday, November 11 at Elphinstone, Maradana, Colombo – 10, commencing from 8.30 am to 12 noon.


Eight petitions before SC

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa told Parliament yesterday that there are eight petitions being heard before the Supreme Court regarding the Local Authorities (Special Provisions) Bill and the Local Authorities Elections (Amendment) Bill.


Infant in her arms, babul in pockets

A woman ganja peddler was arrested by the Habarana Police yesterday opposite the Meegaswewa bus stand while being in possession of 30 packets of 'babul' laced with narcotics yesterday.

The woman was carrying an infant in her arms while engaged in the trade, police said. Investigation are continuing.


Goldfish join G20 security

In addition to thousands of heavily-armed police and troops, six goldfish will put their lives on the line to safeguard world leaders at this week's G20 summit in the South Korean capital.

The Convention and Exhibition Centre in southern Seoul which is hosting the event will use the fish to check the purity of the water supply to restrooms, an official said Tuesday. SEOUL, Tuesday, AFP

A 'Mahaweli Mobile Service' organised by the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Ministry will be held at the Sampathnuwara MV in the Mahaweli 'L' zone on November 13 from 9 am to 3 pm. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Deputy Minister S M Chandrasena and high Ministry officials will be in attendance.


Scout AGM

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Old Rajans' Scout Association of Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Sri Lanka's first Old Scout Association will be held Sunday November 14 at the Casamara Hotel, Kandy from 9.30 am.
