Help little Diluka



K Diluka

K Diluka aged two and half years of Koratuwa Waththa, Ovitigamuwa, Puhulwella in Kamburupitiya is diagnosed of acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

She needs treatments for the next three years.

Her father K Sunil says he is unable to bear the cost for the medicines and other essentials of the child.

He requests the public to assist his child’s cause by sending whatever financial contribution to help him care the child. All contributions can be remitted to account No 133 200 120047198 at the Peoples Bank, Kamburupitiya branch.
 


G D S Peiris passes away

The death occurred of former Lake House staffer G D S Peiris. He was a TT player who represented the Lake House Sports Club from 1975 to ‘83. Later he was elected as the Vice President and also as the Asst. Secretary of TTSL He held the post of Manger of the national Table Tennis team on foreign tours and at the time was the Manager of TTSL.

His funeral takes place on Sunday at the Kirulapone cemetery at 5 p.m. cortege will leave residence at 3.0 p.m. 45/25M, Hikgahawatte Mawatha, Pepiliyana.


D A Rajapaksa 43rd death anniversary

The 43rd death anniversary commemoration of former Deputy Speaker and Minister D A Rajapaksa, will be held tomorrow at 9 am at the Tangalle Town Hall. The D A Rajapaksa Memorial Lecture will be delivered at 10 am.

Nearly 100 Sisura Scholarships will be presented to students by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to mark the event. An all night Pirith chanting ceremony and an alms giving has been organized at Medamulana the following day.

Floral tributes to the D A Rajapaksa statue will also be placed by President Rajapaksa at Tangalle town.
 


Eleven envoys present credentials

The newly appointed nine Ambassadors and two High Commissioners presented their credentials to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga also participated.

The new envoys are Islamic Republic of Pakistan High Commissioner Seema Illahi Baloch, Switzerland Ambassador Thomas Litscher, Kingdom of Norway Ambassador Hilde Haraldstad, Mongolia Ambassador Voroshilov Enkhbold, Kingdom of Cambodia Ambassador Yous Makana, Mexico Ambassador Jaime Virgilio Nualart Sanchez, Sultanate of Oman Ambassador Sheikh Humaid Bin Ali Bin Sultan, Republic of Peru Ambassador Javier Paulinich, Republic of Cyprus High Commissioner Nafsika Chr Krousti and Socialist Republic of Vietnam Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Tan.

Acting Education Minister

Justice Minister Athauda Seneviratne has been appointed acting Education Minister by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena has gone to Korea to take part in an educational conference while Deputy Education Minister T B Ekanayake is on an official visit to China.





 


Peradeniya reopens partially

The Peradeniya University will reopen four of its faculties on November 8. Agriculture, Arts, Engineering, and Science faculties were temporarily closed following student unrest last month. Vice Chancellor Prof Sarath Abeykoon requested the hostelers to report to the University on November 7.


Four soldiers injured in accident

Four soldiers were injured in a road accident along the A9 Road yesterday.

They were travelling in a container between Irattaperiyakulam and Nawagama in Vavuniya.

Three who were critically injured are receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Vavuniya Hospital.

The container had gone off the road and turned turtle.


Career guidance, marketing seminar

The International Association of Lions Clubs, district 306 - Lions Club of Colombo Fort will conduct a free of charge career guidance program and marketing training program for Sri Lankan youth as part of their service projects.

It will be held on November 7 from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm at the Public Library, Colombo auditorium.


Protective fence around Tissawewa

Irrigation and Water Resources Management Deputy Minister S M Chandrasena during a special observation tour yesterday at instructed Anuradhapura Tissawewa officers to protect water of the tank from pollution.

He requested to erect a protective fence to prevent vehicles entering the tank premises for washing.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that over 25,000 families living around Tissawewa use its water for daily and for religious activities connected with the Sri Maha Bodhiya.


Mobile service for Warakapola

Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Kithsiri Wijetunga has taken steps to create a mobile service unit in the PS division in Dedigama constituency in Kegalle to accelerate finding solutions for long overdue problems.

The mobile unit has been established in the Warakapola PS building for the convenience of the public.

It will function from every Friday 9 am to 4.30 pm with the presence of the PS Chairman along with the other officers.


Batticaloa Hindus celebrate Deepavali

Hindus in the Eastern Province celebrated Deepavali festival a grand scale due to peaceful atmosphere in the Eastern Province. Crowds had gathered to Annaihandhi Pillaiyar, Masinheashwar, Kokkodicholai Tantoneasvarar and other Devalayas in the Batticaloa District to attend religious services.


Kegalle district elders visit Jaffna

Kegalle district Elders Association arranged a trip to Nagadeepa and Jaffna peninsular recently on universal Elders Day on the instructions of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, Social Service Minister G. M. Karunaratne and his staff, seventy eight elders participated in the trip.

This was funded by the Sabaragamuwa PC Social Service ministry.

The Elders visited Nagadeepa Viharaya and several historical venues in the Jaffna peninsular.


BoC to grant cultivation loans

Bank of Ceylon, Vavuniya Branch granted a cultivation loan of Rs 12,000 per acre to cultivate paddy during the Maha season. These loans are granted at low interests for developing agricultural activities of farmers in the North whose plantation work were hampered due to terrorist activities.

Loans can be repaid in six months.


Gokarella needs basic amenities

Residents of the Gokarella town in the Hiriyala electorate appeal the authorities to provide basic amenities to the town.

The town does not have a public lavatory.

The drainage system of the town is clogged with garbage making it a stinking town.

As a result, residents of the town are compelled to face a health hazard. There is no parking place for three-wheelers.

Water provision is also a requirement.


Primary school records highest passing rate

The Kithuhitiyawa Primary school, a remote school located in Kekirawa in the Anuradhapura district has recorded the highest Grade Five scholarship examination results percentage of the country.

The percentage recorded is 92 percent. Out of 12 students who sat for the examination, 11 have scored high marks. Pramoshika Sanjeewani Wijethunga who secured 184 marks is the second in the district.

The school consists of 81 students and seven teachers.

A ceremony to felicitate the eleven students was held at the Kithuhitiyawa Primary school recently with North Central Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake participating as the chief guest.


Boy drowns in lavatory pit

A two-year-old boy drowned in an unprotected lavatory pit while playing with a boy aged three on November 3.

The victim was R A Shehan Dinuka of Awarakotuwa, Hendala, Wattala.

The boys were playing near the pit when Dinuka accidentally fell into the unprotected lavatory pit, the inquest held by Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Ragama Priyankaralal was told.

A verdict of death due to drowning was recorded by the inquirer.

Wattala police led evidence.


Stepping into social harmony

One hundred and fifty eight former LTTE cadres who completed rehabilitation program were handed over to their relations, at a special Deepawali puja held at the Vavuniya Central College and Vinayagar Hindu Kovil.

One hundred thirty one male and 27 female detainees underwent the rehabilitation program conducted under the supervision of rehabilitation program coordinator Colonel Manjula Gunasinghe and Major Rohana Jayantha. Detainees, army officers and relations attend the Deepawali puja.


Pubbaramaya in neglected state

Anuradhapura Pubbaramaya, also known as Poorwaramaya located on 20 acres near the Rajarata University Agriculture Faculty is in a neglected state overgrown with weeds.

King Dutugemunu's son Prince Saliya had lived here with Asokamala, his consort. It is also believed that Pubbaramaya had links with Abhayagiri Viharaya. The shrine room, dagoba, refectory, Bo Maluwa, Uposathagaraya are all facing destruction.

German Tech in North

A German Technical Institute will be opened in the North for the benefit of unemployed youth. This institute will provide training for youth, said an officer from the German Embassy. He said training institutes have already been opened in Colombo and Batticaloa districts and the North will be provided one.


German delegation visits library

A German parliamentary member delegation headed by Peter Eneborger visited Jaffna Public library and met the Mayor, Municipal Commissioner and Jaffna Municipality members at the library auditorium. The Mayor and the Municipality members requested him to allocated funds to put up buildings and for the water supply scheme of the Municipality.

The leader of the delegation detailed the various help rendered by his country. During the past 10 years Germany had given funds to rehabilitate schools, building of houses and electricity extensions. He said that they are ready to help further but the requests should come through the Government.


Mobile Service

A mobile service to identify the needs of the settlers in the Victoriya Region under the Mahawali Authority and to attend to the needs will be held today from 8.30 am at Rajawatta Tamil Maha Vidyalaya. Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Irrigation and Water Resources Management Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Deputy Minister S M Chandrasena will particitate.

Issuing of land deeds to settlers, distribution of saplings for plantation and attending to land disputes are some of the key factors address by the mobile service said Victoria Project officer J L S J Kumarihamy.


Prisoner sentenced

A prisoner serving 15 years rigorous imprisonment for heroin trafficking, was sentenced again to three years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000, in default of six months imprisonment by Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Malanee Gunaratne recently.

Baminahannadige Padmasiri Fernando, 60, produced before Court by prison officials, pleaded guilty to another heroin drug trafficking case. Fernando was indicted by the Attorney General for possessing and trafficking heroin weighing not less than one gram of heroin while in Panadura. He admitted to six previous convictions regarding drug trafficking.

State Counsel Wasantha Perera informed court that the accused is a prisoner serving 15 years rigorous imprisonment for heroin trafficking.

He is a menace to society. Heavy punishment is necessary. He cannot be rehabilitated, Perera said.


Road renamed

Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha has passed a resolution to name the road leading to Kandewatte in Padukka near Udumulla public cemetery after late D D Nimalsiri, a former Vice Chairman of the Seethavaka Pradeshiya Sabha and Chairman, Hewagam Korale East MPCS Union Ltd, in appreciation of his services to the area.

The motion was presented by PS member Ranjani Jayanthi Iddagoda (UPFA).


Completion

The infrastructure work of Sangupiddy bridge will be completed before the end of this month, Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotalawela said. The Sangupiddy bridge links Pooneryn and Jaffna.

This bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs one billion. It is 288 metres long and 7.5 metre in width.

The Mannar-Pooneryn and Mannar-Puttalam roads will be linked by this bridge. The distance of Colombo-Jaffna road will be shortened by 100 kilometres by using Sangupiddy bridge.


Undergraduate drowns in Wellawatte sea

An undergraduate of Sri Jayawardenapura University drowned in the Wellawatte sea yesterday while another was reported missing.

Around six undergraduates of the Sri Jayawardenapura University had gone for a swim when they had encountered some difficulty, witnesses said. The Navy rescued four students. The Navy found the body of one student while a search was on for another student who was reported missing.

This Industrial Estate, houses 17 major export oriented manufacturing companies. MDK Food Products (Pvt) Limited producing food items and beverages, “Lakpa” Footwear (Pvt) Limited producing footwear and Elastometric Engineering Company Limited producing rubber goods, were subjected to the Minister’s observation.


 



 


The Gampaha District Senior Citizen Organization issued an certificate of appreciation to Minister Felix Perera to felicitate his 32 year service as a politician and a social worker. Senior Citizens, Organization founder member and President Public Relation Coordinator Wajira Irugalbandara handed over the Certificate to the Minister. Indigenous Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranayake, Former Gampaha District Parliamentarian S D Bandaranayake, Gampaha District Secretary and Former Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri also participated


 



 


The Navy arrested four Indians smuggling 750,000 Beedi in a fishing craft West of Arippu. The Navy Intelligence Unit and Rapid Action Boat squadron jointly carried out this operation. The consignment was packed in 25 packs containing 30,000 Beedi each and covered with polythene to protect from sea water. Indian Rupees, GPS and mobile phones were also seized. The suspects and the items were handed over to Kalpitiya Police for investigations.
