Northern renaissance:
Fishery harbours to add colour

construction of six modern fishery harbours in the North will begin
soon. The harbours will be constructed to meet with international
sanitary standards.
New fishery harbours are also being built along the Western and
Southern coastal belts in Negombo, Ambalangoda, Hambantota, Chilaw,
Dodanduwa and Dikowita fishing areas. Ceylon Fishery Harbours
Corporation Chairman Amal Senalankadhikari told the Daily News the
fishery harbours in the Northern Province will be constructed with
foreign aid.
Denmark,China and Korea have undertaken the task. They plan to
commence construction before the end of the year. Work of some harbours
will begin this month. The harbours will be constructed under the Ceylon
Harbours Corporation's program to modernize the country's existing
fishery harbours. The Corporation will increase the number of fishery
harbours from 70 to 200.
He said the Corporation will build 25 fishery harbours at strategic
coastal locations in the North.
Denmark will construct three fishery harbours on the Northern coast
of Vesalai, Gurunagar and Gandhara fishing areas in Jaffna. The Korea
International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will construct a harbour at
Milady in Jaffna. China will construct two harbours in the peninsula, he
said.
The harbours will be equipped with water supply systems, modern ice
plants and fish processing centres, said Senalankadhikari.
