Banking sector shoulder responsibilities

The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) and the People’s Bank signed an agreement to implement Sevana Saviya housing program in the presence of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna.

The banking sector of the country is entrusted with many responsibilities in implementing development programs, Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa said.

The State Banks play an appreciative role in social uplift. He said the People's Bank will bear social responsibility by constructing houses for low income earners of the country.

Wimal Weerawansa made these observations after signing an agreement between the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) and the People's Bank to implement proposed joint program of Sevana Saviya to provide housing loans valued Rs 200 million, held at the Ministry auditorium Wednesday.

The NHDA will implement Sevana Saviya with the People's Bank and other institutions in 2011, parallel to the proposed 1 million housing and settlement program. The People's Bank will provide Rs 200 million for the NHDA under the first phase of the program. The NHDA will provide housing loans from Rs 200,000 to Rs 300,000 for each recipient of homeless families.
