French aid for East

Euro 89 million from AFD:

The French Development Agency (AFD) has provided Euro 89 million for infrastructure development projects in the East.

Of this Euro 79 million will be given for the Trincomalee District.

Euro 58.16 million will be used to construct roads in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.

Roads being constructed are the A15 road from Thirukkodiyamadu to Trincomalee which is 98 km, the B10 road from Allai to Kantale which is 41.3 km and the C-class coastal road from Mawadichenai to Ganesapuram.

Development of the A15 road from Thirukkodiyamadu to Trincomalee includes construction of five new bridges among others.

Work will be completed by next year.

The AFD will also funds three other projects which include improvement in drinking water supply, electricity distribution and the development of schools, libraries and medical centers.

AFD is also planning to finance Jaffna, Kilinochchi water supply and sanitation projects.

AFD has been in operation in Sri Lanka since 2005.
