Fraud cause: Police look for divisional UNP politician

Wennappuwa Police Superintendent's Office has started an investigation to apprehend a divisional UNP politician who is alleged to have fraudulently collected several hundred thousand rupees from students seeking to go abroad for studies on the pretext of providing them with income certificates.

The suspect, a former UNP member of the Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha had allegedly published advertisements in newspapers promising income certificates to students aspiring to go abroad for studies. He is said to have instructed the students to deposit five percent of the value of the income certificate in the bank promising to deposit the rest 95 percent in the bank.

Since he has gone missing from the area, 33 students who were cheated by him had lodged complaints at the Wennappuwa Police Superintendent's Office Fraud Investigation Unit. The CID has also received one complaint.

Wennapppuwa Police are conducting further investigations.
