People all waiting in line with their pets

World Animal Day on October 4 was an occasion to carry a message on the importance of controlling the dog and cat population and to raise awareness on the need to vaccinate pets against Rabies.

The Animal Welfare & Protection Association (AWPA) organized a sterilization program in the rural setting of Kahathuduwa on October 3 and was successful in sterilizing 67 animals, dogs and cats and vaccinating 43 dogs against rabies of residents in the neighbouring villages.

A pet dog or a cat is a common feature in village homes and the residents are often unable to access the free service extended by the Government Veterinary services either due to ignorance or their inability to take the pets to a service centre on a week day.

Providing the service within easy access to a rural community was a concession offered by the AWPA, the program was appreciated by the residents. The demand for such services from a voluntary organization far exceeds its resources and we are grateful to our membership and well wishers who financed this invaluable community service.
