Kohinoor live in Sri Lanka

The music lovers in Sri Lanka are in for a musical treat as Sewalanka Foundation together with Concerts Norway, Aru Sri Art Theatre and the Norwegian Embassy presents Kohinoor, live in Sri Lanka, a concert series featuring Hip Hop/Raggae Music.

The tour features international artist Mari Kohinoor Nordberg and her group from Norway along with Sri Lanka’s own Chris (CJ) Dasan, the group’s percussionist for the tour.

Mari Kohinoor Nordberg

Kohinoor was born in Dacca, Bangladesh and came to Norway when she was three and a half years old. Her style is a mix between World Music and Dance Hall while her connection with Rasta philosophy also reflects in her music. Her debut album is named Kohi de Browny and much of the material is autobiographic as in good old Hip Hop tradition.

Her voice is raw and powerful and a personal engagement reveals when you listen to her.

The group will perform public shows on November 6 at the Upali Wijayawardena Hall, Kamburupitiya at 5pm and on November 12 at the Town Hall, Negombo at 7pm. In addition they will perform concerts and workshops for children and the youth at the New Arts Theatre, Colombo University, Newstead Girls School, Negombo and in Mathara. The entrance for all these concerts is free of charge.

The group will also hold a workshop for up and coming music groups at the Sanasa Hall, Mathara on November 7 at 10am.

The workshop is free of charge and those interested can register by mailing to [email protected]. Mathara workshop and the concerts are organized with the help of Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena Foundation.

This is the sixth group of musicians touring Sri Lanka as part of a broader music cooperation established between Concerts Norway, Norwegian Embassy, Aru Sri Art Theatre and Sewalanka Foundation.

Norwegian Groups such as Ras Nas (reggae), The Indian Core (Jazz), Nils-Olav Johansen Quartet (Jazz), SISU (percussion) and Classical Evergreens (Opera) who toured Sri Lanka previously as well as the Galle Music Festival, came alive as part of this programme.

Jaffna Music Festival, a folk themed music event is also being planned at present and is expected to be held in March, 2011.
