Danushka bowls Nalanda to victory

Off spinner Koshan Danushka took a match bag of twelve wickets for 66 to spearhead Nalanda College to a morale-boosting eight wicket outright victory over Lumbini MV in their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match which concluded at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Danushka who took a five wicket haul in the first innings returned career best figures of seven wickets for 20 in the second innings as Lumbini MV were skittled out for 106 runs in their second attempt.

Earlier Nalanda could add only two runs to their overnight total and were dismissed for 128 runs in the first innings. But they came back strongly through the individual brilliance of Koshan Danushka who had a memorable outing with a match bag of twelve wickets for 66 runs.

The Nalandians after their first innings debacle batted more sensibly during their run chase and reached their target of 109 runs while losing only a couple of wickets.

Lumbini MV: 129 and 106 (D. Priyadarshana 26, K. Danushka 7 for 20, D. Tharinda 2 for 16)

Nalanda: 128 (H. Kumarasinghe 23, I. Ranjana 50, P. Jayasuriya 4 for 37, R. Sandaruwan 3 for 21, M. Liyanapathirana 2 for 37) and 109 for 2 (V. Tharusurath 38, C. Kumarasinghe 54 n.o)

Major honours for Thurstan

Thurstan College recovered from last week’s defeat to take first innings honours over Wesley College in their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match which ended in a draw at Campbell Park yesterday.

Thurstan College rattled up a huge 313 runs with opener Supun Navaratne missing out a century by just two runs. Together with Praboda Arthavindu the pair put on a century opening stand and set the pace for an impressive first innings total.

Wesley: 256 and 105 for 7 (A. Kariyawasam 45, K. Silva 2 for 20, S. Wijesinghe 2 for 22)

Thurstan: 313 (S. Navaratne 98, P. Arthavindu 80, T. Madurapperuma 29, S. Dias 31, K. Silva 23, A. Fonseka 4 for 95)

Matale Thomians struggle

S. Thomas’s College Matale were struggling at 106 for 7 in reply to Carey’s first innings total of 179 runs on the opening day of their inter school under 19 cricket tournament match which commenced at Mount Mary yesterday.

Carey: 179 (S. Mapatuna 38, T. Dananjaya 33, S. Asela 30, M. Rafeeque 4 for 50, A. Wijeratne 3 for 28)
