Korean aid for railways

Minister Welgama

Sri Lanka will receive Korean assistance to develop an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) technologies to develop railway transport.

Transport Minister Kumar Welgama who attended the seventeenth ITS World Congress, Busan 2010 in Korea last week on the invitation of the Korean Government said that the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) combining transport and IT technologies together, can serve as an efficient and flexible vehicle to help to solve problems in the transport sector. The Korean Government will support Sri Lanka with technology and financially to develop railway transport. Sri Lanka Railways Chief Engineer V Amaratunga said an ITS is being developed to help meet the challenge of providing safe, efficient ,low emission transport.

Transport accounts for a major part of the carbon dioxide and other green house gas emissions from human activity.

Amaratunga said there is an increasing convergence between vehicles and information technology including vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication worldwide.
