ANCL Bodhi pooja to bless President
Pinkama

A series of bodhi poojas and pinkamas have been organized by the Lake House Buddhist Association to invoke blessings on President Mahinda Rajapaksa leading up to his inauguration as President for a second term. The first of these Pinkamas was held at the Sambudhdhaloka Viharaya in Fort under the patronage of ANCL Chairman Bandula Padmakumara yesterday.Here Ven Athula Thera of the Dhassanarama in Borella conducting the pinkama. Police crackdown on poster vandals

Kandy Police has decided to file legal action against persons and institutions responsible for disfiguring the Kandy City appearance by pasting posters and commercial advertisements in public places in Kandy town haphazardly without restricting themselves to the places specially allotted for the purpose by the Kandy Municipal Council.

The Kandy Municipal Council has approved 15 spots in city limits for putting up posters and advertisements. Police said those who fail to restrict their activities to these places and pasting posters and advertisements elsewhere would be prosecuted after an initial warning.


Rs 1.8 million babul haul

A man selling babul in Aduruppuweediya was arrested yesterday. Police seized babul worth over Rs 1.8 million from his possession. The suspect is a resident of Central Road, Aduruppuveediya. OIC Geethika Bodhipaksa said the main suspect in the babul trade was abroad and action will be taken to arrest him.

Police requested public support to curb the babul trade by informing the whereabouts of babul dealers in their areas.


Fire guts building

A four storeyed building in Bambalapitiya has gutted after a fire broke out last night. The Fire Brigade and the police together with the support of the residents put out the fire, police said. No one was injured. An investigation is on to find the cause of the fire. Bambalapitiya police are investigating.


United Nations anniversary

A function to mark the 65th anniversary of the United Nations will be held on October 25 starting at 9.30 am at Ananda Samarakoon Vidyalaya Wewala Piliyandala.

This function is organized by the Lions Club of Piliyandala. Laurant Rajwin of the UNGCR will deliver a special lecture.


Woman’s body washed ashore

A headless half naked body of a woman was washed ashore at the Periyapaduwa beach, Sinnapaduwa on Wednesday afternoon.

Puttalam District Judge and Magistrate Sesiri Herath who held the magisterial inquiry ordered the body to be sent to the Chilaw hospital morgue for identification.

He ordered the Mundalama police to conduct further investigations.


Student hospitalised

A student of Deniyaya Central College who sustained severe injuries after being attached by a teacher of the same college was admitted to the Deniyaya District Hospital.

The victim, Deshan Jinendra Ubeysiri (14) is a student of grade 10.


Five fined for consuming liquor

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Lanka Jayaratne imposed fines of Rs 3,500 each on five accused who pleaded guilty to

charges of consuming liquor in public places.

The accused are GR Priyantha, SW Weersekera, KAS Perera, P Rajasekera and S Thaigarajah.

They were arrested by the Fort Central Vice-Squad on Thursday opposite the Fort Railway Station.

Peradeniya University Colombo chapter Alumni Association will hold its family get-together at Rock House, Gangarama Road, Piliyandala on October 31 at 9.30 am.


Annual conference in Jaffna

The annual conference of the Sri Lanka Medical Officers association will be held in Jaffna for three days commencing October 22 at the Jaffna Public Library auditorium hall.

The conference is organized by the Ceylon Medical Officers Association in association with the Jaffna Medical Officers Association.

This is the first time that the Ceylon Medical Officers Association is holding its conference outside Colombo.


Minister in Indonesia for forum

Child Development and Women’s Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadde will participate in the Asian Forum of Parliamentarian on Population and Development being held in Indonesia on October 22 and 23.


Training Centre

A Training Centre of the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority will be opened at Thunukkai in the Mullaitivu District by Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma on October 23 at 8.30 am.

Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa and NAITA Chairman Dr Tissa Jinasena will also be present.


Death anniversary commemoration

The German Dharmaduta Society and the Mitigrigala Nissarana Vanaya Sanrakshana Mandalaya will jointly commemorate the 11th death anniversary of the founder of the German Dharmaduta Society, Berlin Buddhist Vihara and Mitirigala Forest Hermitage Asoka Weeratunga (Ven. Mitirigala Dhammanisanthi Thera) at a special pinkama at the Mitirigala Forest Hermitage Meditation Hall today from 2.00 to 4.00 pm.

Mitirigala Nissarana Vanaya Aranya Chief Preceptor Ven U Dhammajiva Thera will deliver a commemorative Dharma Deshana.


lecture series

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be held on October 25 at 5.00 pm at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 07.

The lecture titled Resurgence of Buddhism under Colonial Rule will be presented by Prof MU de Silva. The lecture is open to the public.
