Bail for 13 Kelaniya University students

Colombo Additional Magistrate Maheesh Wijeweera yesterday granted personal bail for 13 students of the Kelaniya University who appeared before court on notice.

The Magistrate directed the students to sign a personal bond of Rs100,000 each and directed them to appear in court again on October 28, 2010.

Earlier, the Magistrate issued notice on 14 students of the Kelaniya University to appear before court in connection with unlawful assembly, illegal detention of the University officials and damaging the public property.

The Magistrate issued notice on an application by the Kiribathgoda Police who filed a further report in connection with their ongoing investigations into the incident. The 13 students who were granted bail are Bandara Ekanayake, Sampath Ekanayake, Sanjeewa Pradeepkumara, Dhamma Wasantha, Kasul Kausalya, Rumal Madhushan, Chithra Malraj, Sanda Ruwan Wimalasena, Duminda Kumara, Asiri Lakmal, LC Athukorale, ADC Bandara and Samapath Fernando.

Deputy Solicitor General AHMD Nawaz with Senior State Counsel HA Navavi appeared for the prosecution.

Attorneys at law Gunasingha Wanninayake with M Yoosuf, Ranjith Shantha and Sumith Silva appeared for the students.
