UNP subscribed to international pressure - Manusha Nanayakkara
Nihal JAYAWARDENE
Our motherland has been subjected to increased international pressure
in recent times and my party, the UNP too had unwittingly subscribed to
it said Galle district UNP Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara on
Tuesday who crossed over and voted with the government in support of the
18th Amendment.
Some of our own party men had worked underhand to induce the European
Union to deny the country the GSP plus facility for its exports as
evidenced by him during his recent foreign tour, he said.
Nanayakkara said this when he called on the Most Ven Tibbotuwawe Sri
Siddhartha Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter at the Malwatte
Viharaya in Kandy and received his blessings.
Nanayakkara said he joined the Government as he considered it a
bounden duty of young MPs like him to be of real service to their
electors. The massive development work undertaken by the Government in
the Southern Province induced him to join the Government and create the
necessary foundation to serve his Constituents and the people in the
region.
The Mahanayake Thera in reply said the people today faced problems
regarding the safety of their food. While the consumption of flour based
products were being discouraged, problems have cropped up about the
quality of various varieties of rice available in the market following
revelations made by certain sections of the media. The Manahayake Thera
requested Nanayakkara as a former media personality to use his good
offices to persuade these sections of the media to refrain from
confusing the people by giving undue publicity to such reports.
