Commemorating Milton Perera
Ishara Jayawardane
Music is in vogue in any society in the world including even
primitive societies. Sri Lanka is not primitive. We have a history
spanning over 2500 years. Right throughout this history, many are our
sons and daughters of this island who have blossomed into exceptional
musicians. Many are the sons and daughters who have been soaked in this
musical legacy that has been passed down through the centuries.

Arangements have been made to commemorate the 19th death anniversary
of J A Milton Perera on October 26 at Elphinstone theatre, Maradana.
Following the commemoration ceremony there will be a musical evening
which includes the songs sung by J A Milton Perera.
National Film Corporation Chairman and Milton Perera’s son Priyankara
Perera will grace the event. “There will be a gathering of artistes who
will honor this event and make it a success,” said Deputy General
Manager Lanka Dharamawickrama.
“October 26 is the 19th commemoration ceremony of my father. This
ceremony will mark the beginning of his career that started in 1956 till
1991. He produced almost 30 cinematic songs. He has sung 4200 songs.
Also I wish to remember T M Sanghadasa. For 19 years without fail he
honored J.A. Milton Perera. Sanghadasa did a great deal to the Sri
Lankan film industry.” Said Priyankara Perera.
“This has been a continuous and annual event organized by T M
Sangadasa who passed away unexpectedly.
“Even though he has left us, as a tribute to him we are carrying on
with this performance. This was his dream and we want to carry it
forward as a mark of respect. Actors, actresses and musicians will be
singing Milton Perera’s famous songs. The band will be the Sri Lanka
Army.” said Dharamawickrama.
Sanghadasa was advisor to the Sri Lanka Film Corporation and Kala
Lanka foundation chief. He was a one-time Chairman of the Film
Corporation during former President Ranasinghe Premadasa’s time. He
passed away on September 19, 2010. |
