Mini rugby carnival was a tremendous success

The Junior Under 9-10 and 12 A side all island Mini rugby carnival
was a great success which was staged at the Royal Sports Complex on a
grand scale on October 16 which was witnessed by a large gathering of
parents and rugby fans.
It was organized for the 4th successive year by the Western Province
Rugby, Football Development Committee (WPRFDC) headed by Shamrath
Fernando (Chairman WPRFDC) and assisted by N J Mudannayake
(Coordinator).

According to Shamrath Fernando, under the development plan the lads
who took part in the tournament will be playing first XV rugby in a few
years time.
For the first time totaling a large number of participants 800 from
80 teams played at Royal Complex in two tiers.
The highest number of participants were from Royal College Colombo as
follows: Under – 9 two teams A & B. Under 10-3 teams A, B & C and 6
teams A, B, C, D, E and F. The second highest was from St Peter’s
College.
Glaxo Ceylon Ltd., and Sambo Foods came forward to support this
colourful rugby program.
Prizes were given away for the winning teams alongwith certificates.
Rugby legend and fastest runner in Asia (1953) Summa Navaratnam also
graced the occasion.
After the conclusion of the Junior Carnival an exhibition Tag Ruby
Tournament for Masters in Charge of Rugby, and parents were held. |
