Kalpitiya Police yesterday discovered a radio station which had been operating from a secret chamber in the Kalpitiya Market complex in the heart of Kalpitiya town. This radio station covering an area of 15 km from the Kalpitiya town was operating without a valid licence from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission.

Programs were aired on FM 96.1 - 96.2. According to Kalpitiya Police sources, a powerful transmitter, sound control devices, powerful antenna, laptop computer and 14 CDs were taken into custody by the Police.

Two suspects who were working in the radio station were also arrested by the Police.

The radio station had obtained advertisements from businessmen in the Kalpitiya town. According to Police sources, businessmen were charged Rs 1,000 upwards for advertisement through the radio station Seelaran.

One of the suspects arrested by the Police was from a the Kalmunakudy Welfare Camp. The other suspect is a resident of Madurankuliya. The Police by interrogating the suspects have found that the owner of the radio station is a resident of Vavuniya. The suspects were to be produced before the Puttalam District Court. A special police team led by Kalpitiya Police OIC Lansage Ranwalaarachchi made this raid.
