More private Universities needed

News - October 16, 2010

I am an engineer who passed out from University of Moratuwa. Also I obtained an MBA from Colombo University many years ago. My wife is a physician who passed out from Ruhuna University. Both of us are living in Canada now.

We received a world-class higher education from Sri Lankan Government universities. That is why many others along with us are able to go to any country and be successful. In my wife’s case she had to compete with more than 1,000 doctors from all over the world to obtain her medical licence here. Only about 7 percent of those doctors are given medical licence here.

I am happy to say that almost all the doctors from Sri Lanka get selected every year. Many people are surprised about it.

My only problem with Private Universities is that who will administer and regulate the standard of these private Universities? Anyone can open a shop called ‘University’ and admit children, award degrees and make money.

Who regulates the admission criteria, course content, standard of exams etc.?

We understand that we have to have a system to provide opportunities for students who miss University entrance by few marks. But simply allowing anyone to open a ‘private University’ is not the solution.

This will have disastrous consequences on Sri Lankan education system. There has to be a proper government body like the UGC who will regulate these Universities. In India for example, this two tier system has failed.

We know many graduates from India and other countries who we cannot even compare with our AL students. So are we going to lose one of our greatest assets, ‘our education’ system.

I’m not against the establishment of private Universities. What I suggest is to have semi-private institutions monitored and regulated by the government. In that system anyone can open a private University but it has to be monitored and regulated by the government. This will prevent just anybody opening a so-called ‘University shop’.

Strange behaviour

If there are so many female nurses and Midwives, why should male nurses want to go into Labour Rooms.
